Planting thousands of trees, Puratos Grand-Place Vietnam "reinvests" in the environment

In 2021, Puratos Grand-Place Vietnam has successfully implemented two tree-planting programs to contribute to improving the environment and increasing farmers’ income.

Not only known as a giant in the cocoa industry in Vietnam, Puratos Grand-Place Vietnam is also recognized as a pioneer in pursuing the goal of sustainable development, balancing economic and environmental benefits for the straight 20 years. After unremitting efforts to achieve a Carbon Neutral Certificate by the end of 2021, Puratos Grand-Place Vietnam has continued its journey of "greening" its business with more practical and vigorous actions. A series of tree-planting, agroforestry projects recently, aiming at greening the environment are typical examples.

More than 9,000 trees have been planted in Lam Dong and Dak Lak in 2021

Since 2018, Puratos Group has cooperated with PUR Project to activate the tree-planting projects in their cocoa raw material supply areas in many countries around the world such as Vietnam, Mexico, Philippines, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, and Ivory Coast. Under the model of agroforestry, the project targets two main groups of crops including shade trees and cocoa trees. Before the implementation, Puratos Corporation also conducted 5 consecutive practical researches to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of the above model.

With tens of thousands of trees planted, the project helps reducing the carbon amount in the atmosphere, preventing erosion and limiting global warming. Moreover, the agroforestry model also helps cocoa plantations increase their resistance ability to the negative impacts of climate change and create more livelihoods for farmers.

In Vietnam, the project has been implemented by Puratos Grand-Place Vietnam in Lam Dong and Dak Lak provinces since 2019. During the conduction, despite facing many difficulties such as prolonged dry season or the social distancing caused by covid-19 during the rainy season (from July to September) - the golden time to plant trees, the project still achieved positive results with a high survival rate of trees.

As of 2021, more than 9,000 trees have been planted, especially, the survival rate of trees in Dak Lak reaches 99%. Following these successes, Puratos Grand-Place Vietnam also commits to plant 21,000 more trees by 2022. This is how this business "reinvests" in the earth, while increasing income and providing the farmers with life stability so that they can confidently cultivate cocoa trees.

Not only Vietnam, in some other countries, the tree-planting project of Puratos Group also achieved impressive numbers. Specifically, by 2021, this group has planted more than 40,000 trees in Ivory Coast, more than 30,000 trees in Uganda, more than 31,000 trees in the Philippines, more than 35,000 trees in Mexico and more than 8,000 trees in Papua New Guinea.

The “greening” journey persists

After the positive results of the tree planting project integrated with the PUR Project, Puratos Grand-Place Vietnam continues to prolong its environmental protection goal in collaboration with GIZ - the German international cooperation organization to implement the project to renovate cocoa plantations and develop Vietnamese farmers’ livelihoods in two provinces of Lam Dong and Dak Lak. Maintaining the agro-forestry model, the project aims to increase income for farmers and diversify crop groups to green the earth.

Looking at the specific goals set out by the project, it is clear to see the determination and serious investment of Puratos Group in general and Puratos Grand-Place Vietnam in particular. Accordingly, the project is expected to help 300 farms (equivalent to 300 hectares) successfully build the agroforestry systems, improve adaptive capacity to climate change. The net income of 300 households owning these farms will increase by 20%, and simultaneously, 13,000 tons of carbon will also be sequestered in this agroforestry system.

It is known that the project has 5 main components with specific and detailed agenda. After supporting farms to successfully establish agroforestry models, the project will focus on capacity enhancement and income sources diversification for farmers through a carbon offset mechanism. It is expected that the entire target will be realized by 2025.
